The Arkansas Department of Health has temporarily closed Sandy Beach on Greers Ferry Lake in Heber Springs due to elevated E. coli levels. The closure was announced Thursday on the city’s website.
The health department did not immediately provide a timeline for the beach’s reopening, but city officials stated they hope to offer an update after additional water tests are conducted.
E. coli, or Escherichia coli, is a type of bacteria commonly found in the intestines of humans and animals. While most strains are harmless, some can cause severe illness, including abdominal cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting. Elevated levels of E. coli in recreational waters often indicate recent fecal contamination, which can come from sources such as agricultural runoff, failing septic systems, sewage discharges, or wildlife. High temperatures can sometimes contribute to the proliferation of bacteria in water.
