Randa Edwards of Newark, a middle school science teacher for the Cedar Ridge School District, has been awarded a Parsons-Burnett Grant by the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association.

The grant supports the continued education of practicing educators in Arkansas public schools. Edwards, a graduate of Arkansas State University, plans to use the funds to pursue her doctorate in rural and diverse educational leadership with a focus on superintendency.

Eight grants were awarded this year through a competitive application process. Contributions from members of the Arkansas Retired Teachers Association, or ARTA fund the grants.

Founded in 1939-40 with 15 members, ARTA now has more than 11,500 members. The organization works to protect and improve the professional, personal, social, and economic welfare of retired and future-retired public school employees in the state.
