The Arkansas Department of Finance and Administration is warning residents about a text message scam that attempts to steal personal and financial information.
Officials said the text, which has been reported in Arkansas and other states, falsely claims the state needs accurate account information to deposit money. The messages are designed to gain access to bank accounts.
The agency cautioned residents not to provide Social Security numbers, banking details, or tax account credentials in response to the texts. The messages may appear to come from a government agency or suggest immediate action is required, but the DFA said they are not legitimate.
The DFA emphasized it will not send texts requesting sensitive or financial information. The department urged taxpayers to verify the source of any communication and use only official state and federal websites for tax services.
