Three north-central Arkansas counties are among the recipients of funding from the Arkansas Department of Transportation’s 2025 Transportation Alternatives Program. Independence County received $500,000 for the Batesville Greenway Trail Addition, Jackson County was awarded $500,000 for the Sydney Sutherland Memorial Walking Trail for the Jackson County School District, and Stone County was granted $500,000 for the first phase of sidewalks along Highway 5.
The Transportation Alternatives Program, reauthorized through the federal Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, funds projects supporting pedestrian, bicyclist, and other non-motorized transportation infrastructure. It reimburses 80% of eligible project costs, with a 20% local match required.
Eligible improvements include sidewalks, bike lanes, pedestrian and bicycle signals, and trail conversions along abandoned railroad corridors.
In total, ARDOT awarded approximately $18.9 million for 60 TAP projects and $1.8 million for seven Recreational Trails Program projects statewide. The Recreational Trails Program, funded through a portion of TAP funds, supports the construction, maintenance, and rehabilitation of trail systems and related facilities across Arkansas.
