A mix of freezing precipitation pushed into Arkansas on Monday, prompting a winter weather advisory and raising concerns for slick roads during the evening commute.
The National Weather Service said the advisory remains in effect until 6 a.m. Tuesday, as light snow and sleet accumulate mainly across northern and central parts of the state. Ice totals could range from a light glaze to one-tenth of an inch across much of Arkansas, with isolated amounts approaching two-tenths of an inch in western, central, eastern, and northeastern areas.
Forecasters warned motorists to expect slippery roads and potentially hazardous travel through Monday night.
In Batesville, the threat of icing has forced city officials to close all White River Wonderland activities on Monday evening. The holiday lights display will stay illuminated until midnight, though any individual feature that shuts off will remain dark until its electrical components can dry.
The weather service said mostly cloudy skies are expected midweek, with highs near 40 degrees on Thursday and Friday. Chances for freezing rain return Thursday night and Friday morning as temperatures dip into the upper 20s.
State officials advised residents to monitor updated road conditions through I Drive Arkansas.
