A shower of stuffed animals covered the court at Becknell Gymnasium as Lyon College held its annual Furry Frenzy Toy Toss during the men’s basketball game against East Texas Baptist University, collecting 223 plush toys for the community.
The event, organized by the Lyon College Student-Athlete Advisory Committee, allowed fans free admission in exchange for bringing a new stuffed animal. Spectators tossed the toys onto the court after the Scots scored their first points of the game.
All donations will go to the Rotary Club of Batesville’s Angel Tree program, which provides Christmas gifts for local children.
Tommy Newton, president-elect of the Rotary Club and vice president for enrollment services at Lyon College, thanked participants for their support, saying the donations reflect “the true spirit of giving” and will brighten the holidays for families in need.
Cross country and track and field led all athletic teams with 70 toys contributed. Among Greek Life groups, Tau Kappa Epsilon donated 52 stuffed animals, while Phi Mu contributed 28.
SAAC adviser Kortney Cunningham said the tradition remains a favorite on campus because it brings together students, employees, alumni and community members while supporting a local cause.
