Severe storms early Saturday knocked down dozens of trees, damaged structures and left thousands without power across Independence County.

The Independence County Sheriff’s Office said crews from multiple agencies spent the morning clearing roadways and checking on residents after storms moved through the area.

Sheriff Shawn Stephens told KAIT that 20 to 30 trees were blown into roadways, while numerous power lines were also brought down. The damage left thousands of customers without electricity and created hazardous travel conditions in several areas.

Some of the heaviest damage was reported along Arkansas Highway 25 east of Batesville near the Charlotte community, where several large trees fell and some structures were damaged.

County agencies — including the sheriff’s department, local fire departments, the road and highway departments and emergency dispatch — worked through the morning to remove debris and check for injuries.

On social media, Kevin Jeffery said the county sustained significant damage but thanked utility crews, emergency responders and volunteers who helped clear debris and assist neighbors affected by the storms.

Officials urged motorists to use caution when traveling, noting that additional hazards could remain on roadways as cleanup continues.
