Metabolic health and healthy aging will be the topic of Oregon State University – Cascades’ Science Pub on May 13.
Presenter Sean Newsom is an associate professor and integrative metabolic physiologist in OSU’s College of Health. He is also co-director of the Translational Metabolism Research Laboratory, where researchers investigate the molecular and cellular basis of metabolic disease and lifestyle interventions.
During his talk, Newsom will explore how weight gain and low physical activity have become common issues despite the negative health issues associated with each and knowledge of the benefits of an active lifestyle. He will also discuss how his research team works to identify new and effective ways to improve human health, including recent findings that suggest a possible strategy for individuals to improve their metabolic health and promote their own healthy aging.
Newsom received a doctorate in kinesiology from the University of Michigan and was a postdoctoral fellow with the University of Colorado School of Medicine’s pediatrics department and in its division of endocrinology, metabolism and diabetes.
The Science Pub will take place from 5:30 to 7:15 p.m. in the Charles McGrath Family Atrium in Edward J. Ray Hall at OSU-Cascades. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. for networking and dining with the presentation to follow at 6 p.m.
Registration is required and on-campus parking is free.
The event is $22 per person, which includes a light, pub-style, pre-lecture dinner. The no-host bar will offer beer, wine, cider and soft drinks.
