Lyon College student-athletes will be eligible to compete for national championships starting next year after the NCAA Division III Membership Committee approved the school’s active membership status, effective Sept. 1.

The approval allows Lyon’s teams to participate in NCAA Division III national championships beginning with the 2025–26 academic year. The designation marks the end of a multi-year transition process.

“This is a major milestone for Lyon College and a moment of pride for our entire campus community,” said Lyon President Melissa Taverner. “Active NCAA Division III membership affirms our deep commitment to student-athlete development, academic excellence and ethical competition.”

The NCAA committee praised the Arkansas college for its alignment with Division III values and commended the administration for its transparency, attention to detail and commitment to athletics.

Kurt Grafton, executive vice president for academic affairs and provost, said athletics is a key part of the school’s educational mission.

“At Lyon, athletics and academics go hand in hand,” Grafton said. “Our students are scholars and competitors who learn to lead with integrity and resilience.”

Director of Athletics Kevin Jenkins thanked campus partners and NCAA representatives for helping guide the transition.

“Our move to NCAA Division III has been intentional and mission-driven,” Jenkins said. “This designation opens the door to championship opportunities and elevates the entire student-athlete experience.”

Lyon College competes in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference. The football program plays in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference.
