The Philadelphia Phillies have signed right-handed pitcher Gage Wood, a University of Arkansas standout and Batesville High School graduate, after selecting him with the 26th overall pick in the 2025 Major League Baseball Draft.
According to MLB.com, Wood signed for $3 million, which is under the $3,492,200 slot value.
The 21-year-old helped lead Arkansas to a College World Series appearance this past season. He gained national attention after throwing a no-hitter and striking out 19 batters in a win over Murray State — one of just three no-hitters in CWS history.
In 10 starts during his junior year, Wood posted a 4–1 record with a 3.82 ERA and 69 strikeouts over 37⅔ innings. He is expected to begin his professional career with the Phillies’ Single-A affiliate in Clearwater, Florida.
“We view him as a starting pitcher,” Phillies amateur scouting director Brian Barber said. “He’s got four pitches, a good delivery, and the ability to keep developing.”
After spending time touring Citizens Bank Park and interacting with Phillies teammates, Wood told CBS News, “It’s awesome…I worked my whole life for this…it’s a blessing and I can’t wait to get going.”
