Batesville’s first roundabout, located at the intersection of 20th Street, Myers Street and Pioneer Drive near the Community Center, has partially opened to traffic.
The roundabout is part of the Myers Street Improvement Project, which began June 9 and required the closure of Myers Street from Sidney Street to the intersection with 20th and Pioneer.
The single-lane roundabout is intended to improve traffic flow, particularly around Batesville High School, by allowing vehicles to move continuously through the intersection. A traffic study found an average of 7,000 vehicles travel through the area each day.
As of today, the roundabout is open to traffic between 20th Street and Pioneer Drive, including access toward the high school. Myers Street remains closed and will require additional work before reopening.
The Batesville Police Department has issued guidance for navigating the roundabout:
- Yield to traffic already in the circle.
- Travel counterclockwise in one direction.
- Do not stop once inside the roundabout.
- Use turn signals and yield to pedestrians in crosswalks.
Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson said the project is on schedule, with the full reopening of Myers Street expected later this year.
