Robert Taylor Griffin of Newark, a respected community leader and former Independence County Judge, passed away on Sunday, August 24, 2025, at the age of 70.

Born Aug. 29, 1954, in Newport to Frank and Lavada (Crawford) Griffin, he graduated from Newark High School and later earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Lyon College in Batesville. In 1975, he married Gayla Nauman, with whom he shared 50 years of marriage and raised a daughter, Natalie.

Griffin farmed row crops and cattle for many years and operated Griffin Seed and Grain Company. He also served three terms on the Newark/Cedar Ridge School Board and was active as a youth sports coach.

In 2003, Griffin was elected Independence County judge, a role he held for five consecutive terms over 12 years. During his tenure, he oversaw financial reforms that erased more than $2 million in debt and built up county reserves. He also pushed through changes to the budgeting system that allowed departments greater control and directed more funding to public safety, including a 34% increase for the sheriff’s office and jail over a decade.

Griffin was credited with modernizing the county’s 911 system, including equipment upgrades and cybersecurity measures that protected it from a ransomware attack without paying a ransom. He also promoted economic growth and education initiatives, including partnerships between local government and area schools.

At the national level, Griffin testified before Congress in 2013 on conservation and infrastructure, drawing on his background as a third-generation farmer.

In 2019, Griffin was featured in Business View Magazine, highlighting Independence County’s growing economy—new businesses, retail development, and partnerships with educational institutions. In that piece, he described the county as “a community that’s on the move,” emphasizing the county’s industrial expansion and collaborative economic development efforts.

According to his obituary, Griffin was a member of Newark First Baptist Church and enjoyed playing Texas Hold’em, hunting, and time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; daughter Natalie Davenport of Roland; grandson, Townes; sister Anne Moore of Newark; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Wednesday at Maple Springs Baptist Church, with burial at Blue Springs Cemetery in Newark. Visitation begins at 11:30 a.m. at the church.

Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.
