An incident at Newport High School was quickly resolved Monday morning after officials were alerted to a possible weapon on campus, authorities said.
Around 10 a.m., administrators received the report and, with the help of the school resource officer, located a weapon. A student was taken into custody by the Newport Police Department, and the weapon was confiscated.
Superintendent Jon Bradley said in a statement that no threats were made toward students or staff. He credited the swift actions of administrators, the school resource officer, and Newport police for resolving the situation quickly and safely.
Bradley thanked all involved for their “immediate and professional response,” saying it prevented the incident from escalating. He emphasized that student and staff safety remains the district’s top priority.
