State and local officials gathered Friday for a ribbon-cutting to celebrate the completion of Myers Street improvements, including Batesville’s first roundabout.
The project widened about a half-mile stretch of Myers Street and added a roundabout at the intersection of Myers, 20th Street and Pioneer Drive.
The $2.9 million contract was awarded to White River Materials, Inc. in May 2025, with construction beginning the following month. Funding came from both state aid and city dollars.
City leaders said the roundabout is expected to improve traffic flow and safety along one of Batesville’s busiest corridors. A traffic study by the public works department counted about 7,000 vehicles per day at the intersection.
In May, Mayor Rick Elumbaugh said the project will ease congestion near schools and neighborhoods. “A lot of people don’t realize how much traffic is there, especially with the school there,” he said.
Public Works Engineer Damon Johnson also noted in May that additional access points and development could change the area further. A new easement will eventually connect to the country club property, and developer Lance Lamberth has started rezoning nearby land for mixed commercial and residential use.
