Free flu shots will be offered to Independence County residents next week as health officials urge the community to get vaccinated ahead of flu season.

The Independence County Health Unit will host a walk-in clinic Tuesday, Sept. 23, from 9:30 a.m. to 6 p.m. at 120 Weaver Ave. in Batesville. Residents are asked to bring insurance cards, but vaccinations will be provided at no cost even for those without coverage.

“We want Independence County residents to stay healthy this flu season, and getting a yearly flu vaccination is the best line of defense,” said José Balderas, Independence County Health Unit administrator.

Annual flu vaccines are recommended for most adults and for children 6 months and older. Health officials say the vaccine is updated each year to target the strains of the virus expected to circulate most widely.

“The flu should not be taken lightly,” said Dr. Jennifer Dillaha, ADH chief medical officer. “We are encouraging everyone to get a flu shot to protect themselves and their families, because it is hard to predict in advance how severe the flu season is going to be.”

Those at higher risk for serious complications include older adults, young children, pregnant women, smokers and people with chronic conditions such as asthma, diabetes or heart disease. Health officials also recommend vaccination for caregivers and close contacts of vulnerable groups.

The flu spreads easily through coughing, sneezing or touching contaminated surfaces. While frequent handwashing helps, officials say vaccination remains the most effective protection.
