October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and the Batesville Fire Department is showing its support by wearing pink. Pictured above are Batesville Fire Chief Mark McCollum (from left), Lt. Mark Owens, firefighter Alan Jackson, firefighter Tyler Toland, and Capt. Clint Stark.
Fire departments wearing pink in October is a nationwide tradition, according to McCollum. Stark said he has been with the department for 13 years, and the BFD has been wearing the shirts as long as he’s been a Batesville firefighter.
McCollum said the firefighters went to eat at a local restaurant the other day, and a server approached them, saying, “I appreciate y’all wearing the pink shirts – I am a survivor of breast cancer.”
“That makes you feel good, and we do get a lot of comments from the public thanking us for observing Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and so many of us know someone or are related to someone who has been affected by breast cancer,” McCollum said. “The Batesville Fire Department is proud to show its support for anyone fighting this disease.”
