Multiple fire departments battled what was described as a “significant” blaze at the Independence Power Plant coal yard late Sunday night, according to local officials.
Independence County Judge Kevin Jeffery told media outlet KAIT that emergency crews were dispatched to the facility near Newark at approximately 9:46 p.m. Sunday.
Firefighters from Newark, Oil Trough, and Sulphur Rock responded to the scene to contain the fire. The plant, a major coal-fired power station in the region, saw a concentrated effort from the three departments for several hours.
The situation was brought under control after midnight, with Judge Jeffery noting that all crews had cleared the scene by 1 a.m. Monday.
