A routine traffic stop for speeding ended Friday with the seizure of more than two pounds of methamphetamine and the arrest of a habitual offender.

Jason Daniel Smith, 47, was taken into custody on March 27 after Arkansas State Police and the 16th Judicial District Drug Task Force stopped his Chevrolet Camaro on U.S. Highway 167. Authorities said Smith was traveling 61 mph in a 50 mph zone.

Trooper Nick Ade determined Smith was on active parole. A search of Smith’s person revealed bags of methamphetamine, ecstasy, and alprazolam hidden in his shoes and socks, according to an affidavit.

During a vehicle search, agents reported finding $6,554 in cash on the passenger seat. In the trunk, investigators discovered a grocery bag containing over two pounds of methamphetamine and 451 grams of synthetic marijuana, or K2.

Police also seized a notebook containing names and cash amounts, which they identified as a drug ledger.

Smith faces several charges, including trafficking a controlled substance and possession of Schedule I, II, IV, and VI substances with purpose to deliver. Because Smith has at least four prior felony convictions, he is being charged as a habitual offender.

Smith is held at the Independence County Detention Facility on a $30,000 bond. His first court appearance is scheduled for May 20.
