The Arkansas State Police will investigate a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Saturday morning in Izard County.
The incident began at approximately 9:45 a.m. when Izard County dispatchers received a report of a disturbance involving an individual armed with a knife who was allegedly making threats.
Deputies responding to the scene made contact with the suspect, according to a statement from the Izard County Sheriff’s Office. Authorities said the individual confronted a deputy and refused to comply with verbal commands.
During the ensuing encounter, the suspect was shot and succumbed to their injuries.
Izard County Sheriff Charley Melton has requested that the Arkansas State Police take the lead in the investigation, a standard procedure for shootings involving law enforcement officers in the state.
The names of the suspect and the deputy involved have not been released. Authorities stated that no further information will be made available at this time.
