A local high school student has reached the final stage of one of the most prestigious academic competitions in the United States.

The Batesville School District announced Tuesday that Batesville High School senior Mai Lan Ho has been named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship Program.

Ho is among a group of finalists representing less than 1% of U.S. high school seniors. The program identifies students based on their performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. To be considered a finalist, students must navigate a rigorous application process that evaluates academic records, extracurricular activities, leadership abilities, and a personal essay.

“This is an incredible accomplishment for Mai Lan and for the Batesville School District,” Interim Superintendent David Campbell said. “Being named a National Merit Finalist speaks to the level of dedication, discipline, and excellence she demonstrates every day.”

Finalists will compete for approximately 7,140 National Merit Scholarships worth nearly $28 million.
