The Humane Society of Independence County is preparing for its annual Bark in the Park fundraiser, scheduled for May 2 at Lyon College in Batesville.

The event will be held at Couch Garden behind Brown Chapel and is open to families and their leashed, vaccinated dogs.

Activities include a weenie dog race beginning at 11 a.m., followed by an amateur dog show at noon with competitions for best trick and best costume. Vendors, concessions and a 50/50 raffle also will be featured throughout the day.

The organization is also raffling a Bad Boy ZT Avenger zero-turn mower. Tickets cost $10 each or six for $50 and are available at the event, the HSIC shelter or the Fleaman Barkus Thrift Store at 480 S. Central St. in Batesville. The winner will be announced live on Facebook on May 30.

In an interview with White River Now’s Chad Whiteaker on Arkansas 103.3 KWOZ and 1340 KBTA, Heather McIntire, chair of the HSIC board, encouraged community members to support the shelter by donating items to the Fleaman Barkus thrift store, where all proceeds benefit the society’s animal care mission. Listen to their conversation below.
