Arkansas pitcher Gage Wood, a Batesville High School alum, threw a no-hitter against Murray State on Monday in the College World Series at Omaha, Nebraska, becoming just the third pitcher in Men’s College World Series history to accomplish the feat.
Wood struck out 19 batters in the 3-0 complete game win, allowing only one baserunner on a hit-by-pitch. It was the first no-hitter in the MCWS since 1960.
After the game, Wood credited Price Holmes, his former strength and conditioning coach in Batesville and a former Arkansas football player, for helping build the foundation for his performance.
“The only special thing was I didn’t want to go home. That’s it,” Wood told ESPN after the game.
With the win, Arkansas remains alive in the elimination bracket and will face the loser of the UCLA–LSU game on Tuesday night.
