A Batesville native is headed to Major League Baseball.
Gage Wood, a right-handed pitcher from the University of Arkansas, was selected by the Philadelphia Phillies with the 26th overall pick in the first round of the MLB draft Sunday.
Wood gained national attention last month after throwing a 19-strikeout no-hitter in the College World Series — the third in tournament history and the first in 65 years. He finished the season with a 3.82 ERA, 0.90 WHIP, and 69 strikeouts over 37 2/3 innings.
Known for a fastball that touches 98 mph, Wood transitioned from closer to starter during his college career. Despite missing time early in the season with a shoulder impingement, he remained among the top-ranked college pitchers in the 2025 draft class.
The pick carries a slot value of approximately $3.49 million. Wood is expected to report later this summer.
