Susan Baxter
Political announcement
Susan Baxter for Sheriff of Independence County
My name is Susan Baxter, and I am honored to officially announce my candidacy for Sheriff of Independence County. Alongside my chief deputy running mate, who is also a lifelong resident of this county, I am stepping forward to serve the community that has shaped our lives and values.
Independence County has a proud history dating back to 1820, and I am committed to protecting that legacy while building a safer, stronger future for our families. My career has been defined by service, from working as a sergeant and lieutenant with the Arkansas Department of Corrections to serving in multiple roles within Independence County law enforcement, including deputy sheriff, sergeant of the county jail, and part-time officer with the Newark Police Department. I was also honored to become the first full-time female officer for the Tuckerman Police Department.
In addition to my law enforcement service, I have broadened my experience by working in specialized domestic violence response, conducting statewide criminal background checks, and serving as a licensed private investigator, process server, and professional bail bondsman. Each of these roles has given me unique insights into public safety, accountability, and the importance of working with people from all walks of life.
If elected sheriff, I will focus on five key priorities:
1. Strengthening Interagency Relations – Building stronger collaboration with the Batesville Police Department, the 16th Judicial Drug Task Force, our local school districts, and the court system.
2. Jail Reform – Improving training, enhancing staff retention, and pursuing alternative incarceration methods to ensure fairness and efficiency.
3. Fiscal Responsibility – Partnering with our circuit and district courts and the quorum court to seek grants and alternative funding to protect taxpayer dollars.
4. Employee Retention – Supporting and retaining quality deputies and jail staff to address shortages and ensure the safety of our community
5. Constitutional Law Training – Guaranteeing that every county employee receives proper training in constitutional law, ensuring fairness and accountability in every action we take.
I believe leadership means more than wearing a badge – it means listening, protecting, and serving with integrity, accountability, and respect for every citizen. With your support, I will dedicate my experience and my commitment to making Independence County a safer place for all of us while honoring the traditions that make this community strong.
It would be the greatest honor of my life to serve as your sheriff. Together, we can build a future of trust, safety, and opportunity for Independence County.
With respect and gratitude,
Susan Baxter
