After weeks of parched lawns and dropping streamflows, north-central and northeast Arkansas are facing a strong chance of much-needed rain this week — but the system also brings a risk of storms.
The National Weather Service forecasts periods of rain and thunderstorms for the north central and northeast Arkansas through Wednesday, with the most significant storm potential Tuesday into Wednesday. Meteorologists say storms could produce heavy rainfall capable of flooding, before conditions begin to dry late in the workweek.
Statewide drought indicators show much of eastern and central Arkansas running well below normal rainfall for the season, with some areas several inches short of typical totals. However, experts caution that a single round of rain — even heavy — is unlikely to erase longer-term deficits without follow-up precipitation.
