Lyon College students, faculty, and staff will step out of the classroom and into the community Wednesday for the college’s 31st Annual Service Day, one of Batesville’s largest single-day volunteer initiatives.
Classes will be canceled for the day as more than three dozen service projects unfold across Batesville and Independence County. The projects, coordinated by the college, aim to connect students with local organizations and community needs while fostering a culture of service and civic engagement.
The day will begin at 8:30 a.m. with a kickoff ceremony on the back steps of Brown Chapel and Fine Arts Building. Lyon College President Dr. Melissa Taverner and Batesville Mayor Rick Elumbaugh are scheduled to deliver remarks, followed by a blessing for participants before volunteers head to their assigned work sites.
“Service Day reminds us that our success as a college is deeply connected to the broader community we are privileged to serve,” said Rev. Maggie Alsup, Lyon College chaplain and director of service. “It’s our hope that students gain an appreciation of service and continue to carry that mindset throughout their lives.”
After completing morning projects, participants will return to campus for a community lunch celebrating the day’s efforts.
Lyon College’s Service Day began in 1994 as a way to unite the campus through service and has since grown into a cornerstone of the college’s relationship with the surrounding community.
