A Cleburne County man has been arrested in connection with a fatal shooting that left one person dead in Ida, authorities said.
Cleburne County Sheriff’s Office said deputies responded to a home in the 3000 block of Heber Springs Road North around 7:07 p.m. on Oct. 20 after reports of a shooting. Deputies found Dustin Cannon, 42, at the scene and another man, identified as Austin Cannon, dead outside the home on Heber Springs Road from apparent gunshot wounds. According to KARK/Fox 16 News, the two men were brothers.
After processing the scene and consulting with the prosecutor’s office, investigators arrested Dustin Cannon and charged him with one count of first-degree murder. He is being held at the Cleburne County Detention Center on a $1 million bond.
Sheriff Chris Brown said Dustin Cannon was waiting for deputies in the driveway with his hands up when they arrived.
Brown confirmed Dustin Cannon was an employee of the Bald Knob School District, though his position was not immediately clear. District officials said a teacher had been placed on administrative leave after self-reporting an off-campus incident that occurred in another county.
The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains ongoing. All suspects are presumed innocent until proven guilty in court.
