New agriculture programs at the University of Arkansas Community College at Batesville won approval Thursday from the University of Arkansas System Board of Trustees, the Arkansas Democrat-Gazette has reported.
The package includes an Associate of Applied Science in Farm and Ranch Management, a technical certificate in Precision Agriculture, and a certificate of proficiency in Agriculture Drone Technology. Provost Zach Perrine said the programs are expected to launch in August 2026, pending approval from state and regional higher-education agencies.
UA System President Jay B. Silveria said the offerings support careers in farm management, precision farming, and conservation, and bolster state prosperity and national food security. About 80% of instruction will take place on a working farm, Chancellor Brian Shonk said.
The college has secured a 55-acre property near campus, a $5 million HIRED workforce grant, and more than 200 acres leased at no cost to support hands-on training. Officials say interest is already strong, with roughly 20 prospective students inquiring.
Trustees noted the programs will help address an aging agricultural workforce and strengthen Independence County, where agriculture and forestry account for 8.3% of jobs.
