A former nursing director accused earlier this month of stealing hundreds of narcotics from residents has pleaded not guilty in Independence County Circuit Court.
Carla Renee Shaw, 51, of Sidney, faces 33 felony counts following an investigation into missing medication at The Springs of Batesville Nursing Home.
An internal audit at the facility first alerted authorities to the scale of the loss, identifying approximately 757 missing pills over an eight-month period. The missing inventory included high-dosage painkillers such as hydrocodone, oxycodone, morphine, and tramadol.
According to court records filed last week, Shaw was charged with 32 counts of fraudulent practices involving controlled substances and one count of breaking or entering.
Investigators allege that Shaw admitted to taking the medications during initial interviews, telling police she was struggling with addiction while serving as the facility’s director of nursing.
The judge has scheduled a pre-trial hearing for April 21.
