A man who has been volunteering to help to keep the county clean was recognized at Monday’s Independence County Quorum Court meeting.
Rex Williams received a permit during the presentation allowing him to use cleaning stations without cost. Williams told court members he collected over 1,600 bags of trash last year.
A group of patrons who have been working to improve parks in the Desha area appeared before the quorum court asking for approval to submit an application for a $100,000 grant to accomplish additional park improvements.
The grant would provide better playground equipment, improve handicap accessibility, and add a disc golf course. The court approved their request.
The court also approved county truck driver Ed Briscow, who is recovering from ill health, a 10-day sick leave extension since he has exhausted all of his sick days, and needs more recovery time.
In addition, court members approved the selection of contractor, BMD, to build the new Independence County Senior Citizens Center. The approval gives the company a year to complete the project.
