Cherokee Village gem club to host solar eclipse presentation

The Spring River Gem & Mineral Club (SRGMC) will host a presentation on the upcoming total solar eclipse by Dr. David Thomas, a NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory volunteer “Solar Space Ambassador,” on Friday, March 1.

According to a release from the SRGMC, Thomas will discuss the mechanics of solar and lunar eclipses and how to safely view the April 8 event. He will also share his passion for space exploration, fueled by his early childhood experience of the Apollo 11 moon landing.

Currently a professor of biology at Lyon College, Thomas has experience in industry, government, and education, including working on life support systems for the International Space Station. His research focuses on extreme environments that may harbor life beyond Earth.

The SRGMC regularly hosts talks by experts in various fields. Meetings are held on the first Friday of each month (except June and December) and are free and open to the public.

The event will be held at the Thunderbird Center, 62 N. Lakeshore Rd., in Cherokee Village. It will begin at 10 a.m.
