A large contingent of Arkansas State Police troopers, including what witnesses described as a SWAT team, converged on the Pleasant Plains and Floral area of Independence County on Thursday morning, as residents reported an unusually heavy law enforcement presence along a stretch of north-central Arkansas highway.
Social media posts described more than 20 state trooper vehicles running emergency lights northbound on Interstate 57/U.S. 67 south of Searcy, with some witnesses also reporting specialized law enforcement vehicles in the area. Posts circulating on Facebook also suggested troopers gathered near Flippo Church.
Separately, the Midland School District placed its buildings on “secure” status for roughly 15 minutes after the Independence County Sheriff’s Department notified the district that a warrant was being served nearby. The secure status was lifted once officials confirmed a “suspect” regarding the warrant being served incident was in custody. It is unclear whether that incident was related to the broader law enforcement activity.
A request for comment was submitted to the Arkansas State Police. A response had not been received at the time of publication.
This is a developing story. Additional information will be published as it becomes available.
