A local chemistry professor is turning a $30,000 grant into a catalyst for the next generation of Arkansas innovation.
The Arkansas Research Alliance (ARA) announced Tuesday that Lyon College professor Dr. Mengfan Zhu is among 12 recipients of the inaugural Emerging Research Leaders (ERL) program. The initiative is designed to transform early- and mid-career faculty into research powerhouses capable of securing major federal funding for the state.
“We’re strengthening Arkansas’ research capacity by cultivating research leaders from within the state,” said Bryan J. Barnhouse, ARA president and CEO. “Arkansas’ research community works to make our food supply safer, our energy more efficient, and our medicines more effective. Investing in our scientists improves the quality of life in our state.”
The ERL program, managed by AR-Network and the ARA, provides $30,000 annually for up to two years. Unlike traditional research grants, this funding acts as professional development “seed money,” offering mentorship and proposal training to help professors win federal awards that are often 10 to 20 times larger than the initial investment.
Zhu, an assistant professor of chemistry, plans to use the support to bridge the gap between lab discovery and industrial application.
“I aim to advance nanocoatings technology by leveraging the ERL award to attract external grants and expand my research program,” Zhu said.
The program requires participants to submit two to four competitive external proposals during the award period. Sarah B. Smith, ARA program director and principal investigator for AR-Network, noted that the benefits extend far beyond the individual labs.
“Students get a richer education through exposure to cutting-edge research, other faculty can leverage expanding capacity, and the institutions receive direct financial benefits through indirect costs on grants,” Smith said.
The 2026 ERL cohort includes 12 researchers from 10 campuses across the state:
- Craig Porter, Arkansas Children’s Research Institute/UAMS
- Drew Fleming, Arkansas State University
- Robin Ghosh, Arkansas Tech University
- Mengfan Zhu, Lyon College
- Sharon Hamilton, Ouachita Baptist University
- Oscar Tejada Martinez, Southern Arkansas University
- Noureen Siraj, University of Arkansas at Little Rock
- Tamara Glover, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff
- Vinay Ray, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff
- Sathish Ponniah, University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff
- Lei Guo, University of Arkansas
- Arijit Mukherjee, University of Central Arkansas
Funding for the second year is contingent upon a 12-month progress review. Despite the competitive nature of the program — which drew applications from 14 institutions — ARA leadership sees the high interest as a sign of a burgeoning scientific culture in the state.
“Building a substantial research program starts with talented scientists who have a clear vision,” Barnhouse said.
